Contractors are set to battle for places on a £270m framework covering highways, bridge maintenance and surfacing work across South Wales.
Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council is leading the procurement on behalf of Carmarthenshire and Monmouthshire councils for the new SWTRA Highways & Structures Framework 2027.
The framework will run for four years from February 2027, with options to extend annually for a further two years, taking its maximum duration to six years. Up to eight contractors will be appointed across two lots.
Lot 1, worth an estimated £152m, covers highways and structural engineering works including bridge strengthening, carriageway maintenance, active travel schemes, tunnel works, traffic management, lighting, intelligent transport systems, environmental improvements and depot projects.
Lot 2, valued at £118m, focuses on highway surfacing and ancillary works including pavement renewal, drainage, kerbing, footways, road markings, site clearance and emergency maintenance.
The authorities said the longer framework term would improve value for money by giving contractors greater certainty to invest while supporting longer-term asset management programmes and complex infrastructure schemes.
The framework will primarily serve the South Wales strategic road network across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, Swansea, Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot, Carmarthenshire, Monmouthshire, Newport and the Gwent valleys.
Formal invitations to tender are set to be published on 7 September with planned awards in early December. The framework is scheduled to start on 1 February 2027.
