Morris & Spottiswood’s financial growth record

Scottish fit out and M&E specialist Morris & Spottiswood has an impressive track record of financial growth and resilience, as the group continues to drive repeat business from its blue-chip customer base.

The Glasgow-headquartered contractor – which has multiple other office locations throughout Scotland and England – has maintained stable and even robust growth across its P&L and balance sheet, since at least 2020.

For example, shareholder funds during the last five years have trended in an upward direction year on year, with no depreciation, beginning in 2020 with £8.7 million and culminating with £17.5 million last year – a more than 101 per cent increase.

And while at times cash has fluctuated during the same period, the group starts strong (£17.4 million), recovers quickly and finishes ahead of where it began (£24 million).

With regards to profits and turnover, Morris & Spottiswood has been more prosperous, still.

While operating profits have grown annually like clockwork, rising from £717,000 five years ago to nearly £7 million last year (a more than 160 per cent growth rise), strong volumes in the group’s chosen sectors drove yearly turnover forward at pace.

Between 2020 and 2025, annual revenue for Morris & Spottiswood grew by more than 217 per cent, culminating in more than £230 million last year.

Bosses said volume in the previous 12 months was driven by repeat business from blue-chip clients across public, financial, retail and manufacturing sectors, alongside Morris & Spottiswood’s expansion into the South of England.

In recent years the group has also broadened its UK footprint through acquisitions, including the former ISG Cathedral business, which established Morris & Spottiswood England and extended its national presence across 10 offices.

Meanwhile, expansion of its mechanical and electrical arm, Livingston Building Services, continued to support growth, with rising demand from financial services and critical infrastructure projects.

The contractor recently secured a place on the £1.2 billion Procure Partnerships North West Contractor Framework, strengthening its position in the public sector over a four-year term.

Morris & Spottiswood was founded as a modest joinery workshop in Glasgow by WWI veteran George Morris and his friend John Spottiswood.

From humble beginnings on the company’s first project – a new post office for the village of Arrochar – the Morris & Spottiswood of today is delivering major projects throughout the UK including a head office for Lloyds Bank in London.

In addition to Glasgow, Morris & Spottiswood has offices in Livingston, Bristol, Huntingdon, Leeds, London, Warrington and Whitstable.
