The acquired companies – P. J. Thory, Gemmix, and Pro Minimix – supply aggregates, recycled materials, and ready-mix concrete to the construction market.

Based in Coates near Peterborough, the businesses employ around 130 people across nine sites, including sand and gravel quarries, ready-mix concrete plants, and a recycling center processing secondary aggregate.

The acquisition, for an undisclosed sum, enhances Holcim’s presence across the East Midlands, stretching from Market Harborough to St Ives.

Lee Sleight, chief executive officer at Holcim UK, said the deal aligns with the company’s growth strategy, expanding its ready-mix concrete capacity, securing vital mineral reserves, and reinforcing its recycling capabilities to support its circular construction efforts.

James Thory, managing director of TJ Thory Holdings which owned all of the acquired companies, added: “We’re really looking forward to taking the business forward with Holcim UK and harnessing its expertise and networks.

“It is really beneficial to be part of a leading UK and global company which has a clearly articulated vision for circularity and sustainability.

The deal follows the recent appointment of Mohamed Ben Driss Alami as managing director of its cement division, where he will lead Holcim UK’s efforts to drive decarbonisation across its operations.

With 16 years at Holcim spanning France and the United States, and most recently serving as chief financial officer in Algeria, he will now oversee key projects, including the development of low-carbon cement solutions and the establishment of a new carbon capture and storage facility.

He said: “I am looking forward to working with the talented people we have in the team to take the business to the next level, especially with the work we’re already doing to reduce carbon emissions.”

In its latest accounts for the year ended 31 December 2024, revenue for the building materials supplier reached £1.4 billion, with pre-tax profit decreasing to £14.5 million (FY2023: £70.2 million) and operating profit down to £44.1 million (FY2023: £112 million).
