Avison Young hires data centre czar to ‘futureproof’ global expansion

Avison Young has strengthened its data centre capabilities with the appointment of a new UK & EMEA sector lead to meet rising demand and “futureproof” expansion.

Oliver Squires, formerly a director at Gardiner & Theobald with more than eight years of experience in developing, refurbishing, and operating data centres, will now lead Avison Young’s data centre strategy across the UK and EMEA.

Squires joins as the sector is poised for rapid expansion, with investments expected to contribute £44 billion to the UK economy by 2035, according to techUK.

Major industry players such as Microsoft and Google have already committed significant investments, driving strong demand for new infrastructure.

His appointment underscores Avison Young’s commitment to supporting clients during this period of accelerated growth, with major data centre projects planned in the coming years.

Squires highlighted that, as one of the fastest-growing sectors in the UK and Europe, with the majority of planned sites set to be developed over the next five years, his appointment comes at an ideal time to advise on some of the largest projects in the pipeline.

Steven Mason, principal and managing director of building and project consultancy said the hire would strengthen the firm’s expansion of its data centre capabilities and help “futureproof” the sector for years to come.
