Global engineering and design consultancy AtkinsRéalis has created a new managing director role within its Buildings & Places division to enhance urban regeneration efforts across the UK and Ireland.

Richard Bonner, previously the division’s markets director, will now lead the team in a newly created role designed to address growing client demand for a comprehensive, integrated service across the built environment.
With nearly 20 years of experience in the built environment sector, Bonner has held roles at firms including Arcadis, Carillion, and Mott MacDonald, working with local governments, transport providers, and the private sector to address urban development challenges.
In his new role, Bonner will oversee a team of around 2,000 professionals, managing services ranging from planning and design to project management and delivery.
The division focuses on urban regeneration projects, including housing, schools, green spaces, and broader city regeneration efforts – critical components of the UK’s ongoing infrastructure development.

“Our ambition is about more than buildings and together with our partners we’ll be deploying our capabilities to support national and local government, our private sector and industry partners and institutions that fund and finance built assets,” said Bonner.
“The Buildings & Places market is at the heart of developing thriving communities and driving economic growth in our regions, from new housing, schools and green spaces to city regeneration and new towns.”
In February, the firm saw a leadership shakeup, with Richard Robinson transitioning from his role as president of UK & Ireland to oversee the Asia, Middle East & Australia (AMEA) division, with Chris Ball, the group’s chief operating officer of the nuclear business, succeeding him.
