Balfour Beatty has won a £121m contract from National Grid to extend the Bramford 400kV substation in Suffolk as part of plans to strengthen electricity supplies across East Anglia.
The four-year deal, awarded through National Grid’s EPC framework, forms a key element of the Great Grid Upgrade programme and will increase transmission capacity on the network.
Under the contract, Balfour will design and install an extension to the existing substation, creating connections for four new circuits, including two new grid supply points and two shunt reactors to improve network reliability and efficiency.
The contractor will also install new gantry structures to accommodate overhead line connections and deliver the monitoring, control and protection systems needed to operate the expanded facility.
Around 150 people will be employed on the project at peak, including apprentices and graduates.
